“Attitudes” By: David LeGrand

A BATTERY HAS A POSITIVE TERMINAL

This is the way a friend of mine described a man he knew, “the only difference between him and a battery is that a battery has a positive terminal.”

According to the dictionary, the word “attitude” means “an internal position or feeling with regard to something else.” Other words often used as synonyms are: “disposition, feeling, mood, opinion, sentiment, temper, tone, perspective, frame of mind, outlook, view, or morale.”

Bad attitudes are displayed outwardly in our words or actions, such a negative-ness, criticalness, rebellion, defiance, impatience, being uncooperative, apathy, discouragement, independence, presumption, arrogance, self-centeredness, rudeness and such like. Attitudes are inner dispositions of the heart and thoughts — they are the hidden intentions which will eventually serve as the basis for our actions. “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”   Proverbs 23:7.

Positive attitudes help us to cope more easily with daily life. They bring optimism into your life, and makes it easier to avoid worry and negative thinking. If you adopt it as a way of life, it will bring constructive changes into your life, and make you happier and more successful.

THE BENEFITS OF A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

  • Helps achieving goals and attaining success
  • More energy
  • Greater inner power and strength
  • The ability to inspire and motivate yourself and others
  • The ability to surmount any difficulty
  • People respect you
  • Constructive and creative thinking
  • Optimism
  • Motivation
  • Not giving up
  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Seeing opportunities instead of problems

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT

Chuck Swindoll writes, “The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.  Attitude, to me, is more important than facts.  It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what others think or say or do.  It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill.  It will make or break a company, a church, a home.  The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.  We cannot change our past, we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way.  We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.  And so it is with you; we are in charge of our attitudes.”
