Did you know there is nearly $33 billion in unclaimed money sitting in state treasuries? That’s right, $33 billion! Did you also know there are people just like you who had the information they needed to find out if they might have a stake in that money, and then collected thousands? Well, you may be able to also, and I’m going to tell you how!
You might be wondering where all of this “unclaimed” money comes from and how it ended up in the states’ treasuries. The money comes from stocks, bonds, unclaimed payroll checks, checking accounts, utility deposits, pension payments and other sources. If the money is not claimed or remains untouched for so many years, then by law, it gets turned over to the state. The states are happy to hold “your” money for you since they rake in hundreds of thousands in interest every year.
Finding out if you have unclaimed assets is not necessarily a daunting task, but there are companies who may charge exuberant fees when you can do it yourself for free.
Begin your search with http://www.missingmoney.com which is endorsed by The National Association of Unclaimed Property. It is recommended to search every state you have lived in.
Another reputable site is http://www.unclaimed.org and can search every state in the U.S.
To improve your chances, be sure to enter all various possibilities for your name (i.e. James Patrick Jones, J.P. Jones, Jimmy Jones, etc.). These searches are private, and your name is only used to generate the results of the search.
I went there and found that I do indeed have some “missing” money, a whopping $.33 I think I’ll let Uncle Sam keep it. LOL
Wow Mendy, I was so excited for you for about 1 second! Oh well, better luck next time!
Debbie 🙂
thank you for the inf I will try
Thanks Ron
Do the research, maybe you can find something.
Awesome reminder. I have done this before, but just found about $1,100 from a couple of insurance premiums that were never refunded to me.
Search took less than 5 minutes. Also found a small amount for my wife. Not much, but it will buy her a nice lunch out with her friends.
This is even better than finding $20 in an old coat pocket.
Thanks for the reminder.
